Hawk Dancer, 2017

20 x 12 x 9.5 in
51 x 30 x 25 cm

Hawk Dancer is John Denning's latest bronze, created in 2017. Denning was intent on having the panel with the hawk's head that extends down from the outstretched right arm as thin as possible. The foundry would make it 1/4 inch minimum, which he felt would be too bulky. So he created it using bronze clay, which he fired in his home kiln. The individual elements of the panel articulate with silver jewelry findings, providing lightness and a graphic contrast with the negative spaces. The entire sculpture received its rich black and gray hot patina at the foundry, after the figure was cast using the traditional lost wax method.
