Shibui, 2016

9.75 x 10.75 x 2.5 in
25 x 28 x 8 cm

Shibui is an aesthetic term in Japanese which refers to a particular aesthetic of simple, subtle, and unobtrusive beauty. In this refined bronze work, celebrated Northwest artist Gerard Tsutakawa’s humanistic approach and his influence from the cultures and traditions of the Pacific Rim are evidenced. Tsutakawa is very interested in exploring variations on geometric shapes: here we have a slightly modified square within a highly modified square. This pedestal sculpture is finely hand crafted in fabricated bronze, as opposed to cast, and therefore is one-of-a-kind and not an edition. With the artist’s beautiful, rich dark patina with metallic tinges.
